The Airports Council International – North America (ACI-NA) has announced its 2020 Excellence in Airport Marketing, Communications and Customer Experience Awards, crowning the Colorado’s Springs Airport (COS) with the Brand Identity award.

“It’s great to receive national recognition like this for our airport,” said Greg Phillips, Director of Aviation, “especially because our new brand is a true expression of what makes flying in and out of Colorado Spring Airport so special. Embracing the fact that we’re not a big, overwhelming airport… actually calling ourselves small… has given us an opportunity to get out the message that here small also means big options for non-stop and one-stop destinations. It has gotten people talking, and it’s working.”

The campaign focused on the benefits of what traveling through a small airport offers travelers, including shorter lines, less traffic, and more convenience, comfort and friendliness.

“The goal was to underline and help direct an experience that’s friendly, safe and inviting for all who travel through and work at Colorado’s small airport.” said Aidan Ryan, Marketing and Communications Manager. “This is an exciting day, and I am extremely proud of everyone who has helped this brand come to life, especially the COS staff who embody and represent the brand most completely.”

COS worked heavily with a Colorado branding and creative agency, Narrator Group, to develop the message and brand campaign. The elements of the campaign included a brand book, employee value cards, brand video, digital and print ads, radio, and a new, friendly color palette.

“As Greg said, the position works so well only because it’s genuine and unpretentious,” said Jay Sunny and Mark Toft, co-founders of Narrator Group and COS’ contracted creative agency. “The key to effective marketing is having an authentic message. Our partners at COS had the courage to embrace this brand. It’s wonderful to see them succeed.”

While air service saw a large downturn in 2020 due to COVID-19, COS continued to uphold the values of a small airport, including the advantages of safety and lower stress.
