Tips for Applying for a City Career


Your completed application is a reflection of you. Make it a good one! Employers may view the appearance/completeness of your application as a clue to how important high quality work is to you.

  • Follow the directions on the application. Completing the application in full shows that you know how to follow directions.

  • Refer to the correct career title and the correct employer on your application and/or cover letter.

  • If you have had several jobs in a short period of time, use the "Tell Us About Yourself" section to explain - briefly! - why you have a spotty work history. Here's an explanation example: "I've held a few short-term jobs in the past year because I was a full-time student and my schedule changed frequently. I'm now looking for a permanent position and I'm very interested in working for your company."

  • Relate your experience to the job for which you are applying. If you have unrelated experience, it's fine to mention it, but don't spend a lot of space describing it.

  • Complete the employment application in full and don't leave sections blank. If sections don't apply to you, simply respond with "not applicable" or "n/a". Do not use "see resume" to describe your work experience. An application that is not completed in full may cause your application to not be considered for the position.

  • Keep your application consistent with your resume. Make sure all dates, names, titles, etc., on your application coincide with the information on your resume.

  • Proofread your application for typos and grammatical mistakes before submitting it. Remember to check your spelling! If you have misspelled words on your employment application or resume, your chances of getting the job may decrease.

  • If an employer leaves you a voicemail, promptly return the call. If you can't reach the caller, leave a message that you are interested in the job. Never assume the employer will call you a second time.

  • Use a professional sounding email address. Email addresses like are not appropriate for an employment application.

  • Make sure your voicemail message is professional in case a hiring manager needs to leave you a message.

  • Are you a veteran? Be sure to give specific examples of your leadership experience/abilities.

  • Always answer all questions truthfully. By electronically signing your application, you are acknowledging that the information is accurate. You can be denied employment or employment can be terminated in the future if you aren't truthful about your employment record.

    • This includes the "Have you been convicted..." question. The City of Colorado Springs performs background checks for all positions. However, convictions are not an absolute bar to employment; consideration is given to the offense and its relationship to the position for which you are applying.
