On May 12, 2023, the Colorado Springs Airport (COS) will commence an expansion and remodel of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security queuing area with a Wall Breaking Ceremony. Queuing area construction is anticipated to be a four-month project, starting May 15, 2023, through the end of September 2023.
Project Overview:
The purpose of this remodel is to increase the footprint of the security queuing area by approximately 1,400 square feet. Currently, the queuing area is 1,700 square feet and once this project is complete the remodeled area will be around 3,100 square feet. This expansion will allow for an enhanced passenger experience and further accommodate traffic through the checkpoint.
Storefront and footprint renovation of the adjacent retail space, COS Provisions that is operated by Hudson Retail will coincide with this project. COS Provisions storefront will be closed during this time and a temporary kiosk will be set up and operational during the construction period.
“The need for this project is a direct correlation to the growth COS has seen over these past few years, and the growth we anticipate moving forward,” said Greg Phillips, Director of Aviation. “We know this renovation will not only make our checkpoint even easier to navigate, but it will also ensure traffic flow is properly accommodated.”
The estimated cost for this project is $1.2 million and will be paid for with Airport reserves. No taxpayer dollars will be used.
Nunn Construction and HB&A Architecture and Planning were selected for this project through the City of Colorado Springs public Request for Proposal (RFP) process.
With the expected increase of passenger traffic during the peak travel season, passengers are advised to plan accordingly and arrive to the checkpoint a minimum of 90-minutes prior to boarding to allow for any delays at the checkpoint during construction.
