The Colorado Springs Airport (COS) welcomed a total 190,233 travelers through the airport last month. For the month of May, COS enplaned 94,906 passengers, which is a slight decrease of 2.8 percent from the same time last year, but a nearly 30 percent increase in enplanements and 33 percent increase in seats when compared to the industry’s benchmark year of 2019. Frontier Airlines’ exit from the COS market contributed to the year-over-year decline in both seats and enplanements, impacting numbers through May 2023.

Average passenger load factor at COS was 84.5 percent, 3.8 percentage points higher year-over-year. Year-to-date, load factor has averaged 78.6 percent, while summer load factors are expected to exceed 80 percent.

From May 2023 through the end of the year, over 95,000 seats have been added to the COS market with an array of new air service including two new carriers and three new routes: Avelo Airlines began nonstop Los Angeles/Hollywood-Burbank (BUR) service in May, Delta Air Lines began nonstop service to both Atlanta (ATL) and Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP) and Sun Country Airlines joined the COS roster and serves Minneapolis-St.Paul (MSP) nonstop through November.

Effective July 11, Southwest Airlines will begin service to Long Beach (LGB). With the increase in air service, summer travel is projected to surpass previous traffic trends for that same time period.
Currently, COS is modifying the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint queuing area to accommodate the growth in traffic and enhance the passenger experience. Travelers are reminded to arrive at least 90 minutes before their flight is scheduled depart.
