COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department is converting Chutes Trail from a multi-use, bi-directional trail to a dedicated downhill mountain bike trail. Work is expected to begin Thursday, Aug. 22 and be completed by early October. This work is recommended in the North Cheyenne Cañon Park Master Plan that was adopted by the PRCS Advisory Board in May 2018.

“Over the years, Chutes Trail has become a very popular destination in North Cheyenne Cañon Park,” said David Deitemeyer, senior landscape architect. “We are pleased to be able to put the recommendation of the master planA plan for the development of a portion of the city that contains proposed land uses, a generalized transportation system, and the relationship of the area included in the plan to surrounding property. in action to provide a safer and more enjoyable experience for users.”

Approximately 1,600 linear feet of new trail is being constructed for the reroute, which will provide technical, rocky trail features with ramps, drops and berms. It will provide challenges to more experienced riders, as well as easier lines along the more technical sections, allowing opportunities for skill progression. The new upper section will drop from Gold Camp Road and end at the intersection with the Chamberlain Trail, located between the Gold Camp and Mesa reservoirs.

To accommodate the conversion, the project includes the reconfiguration and rerouting of several trails in the area. During construction, segments of Chutes Trail will be closed, and users are asked to follow signs posted in the area. Ladders Trail and the top of Chutes Trail will remain open to provide users the necessary connections from Stratton Open Space to Gold Camp Road. Trail users may encounter construction equipment on these segments during the project.

When completed, Chutes Trail will be open to downhill bicycle only; the Ladders Trail will be multi-use and multi-directional, providing connection from the Chamberlain Trail to Gold Camp Road; and Gold Camp Path will remain a bi-directional, hiking-only trail.
