Construction of pedestrian bridge to close Cimino Drive by America the Beautiful Park

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Starting Monday, March 16, Cimino Drive, between Conejos Street and the U.S. Olympic Sport House, will be closed to allow for the construction of a new pedestrian bridge that will connect America the Beautiful Park to downtown Colorado Springs.  The bridge, which is approximately 250-feet long, will be assembled in the gravel parking lot opposite of the entrance to America the Beautiful Park.

To create a leveling pad to rotate and place the bridge, several landscaping features will be removed from the park, including approximately 25 trees, several light poles and a non-functioning landscaping fountain. These features, located to the south of the park’s main entrance along Cimino Drive, will all be replaced, with the exception of the fountain.

America the Beautiful Park closed for the summer of 2020

Due to the closure of Cimino Drive and heavy construction activity in the area, America the Beautiful Park, including the Julie Penrose Fountain and playground, is closed for the summer of 2020. In addition, special events are not permitted in the park and pavilions are not available to rent during this time. The adjacent trail system remains open to the public.

Project timeline

Anticipated construction milestones include:

  • Mid-March: construction of bridge assembly area and leveling pad
  • April-May: prefabricated steel bridge elements arrive, bridge assembly begins in gravel parking lot
  • June: construction of western abutment
  • September: bridge assembly completed and bridge placed on abutments

Once the bridge is placed on the abutments, it will take a few months to complete all bridge finishes and construction of the elevator and staircase. The bridge is expected to be fully open to the public in early 2021, weather and construction dependent.
