COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The City of Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services department will begin implementing full after-hour gate closures at all entrances and exits to Garden of the Gods Park on Wednesday (Oct. 10). The only exception is a gate located at the intersection of Black Canyon Road and Garden Drive, which will remain open to allow traffic to flow to and from Rampart Range Road.
The gates will help administer the park’s official closure time and help prevent illegal, after-hour vehicular traffic and activity within the park. A private security team will enforce the closure. The park is free and open to the public daily between the hours of 5 a.m.-10 p.m. from May 1-Oct. 31, and 5 a.m.-9 p.m. from Nov. 1-April 30.
“We strongly believe the installation and implementation of this gate system will benefit the long-term health and safety of Garden of the Gods Park,” said Kurt Schroeder, park maintenance and operations manager. “The community at large has been incredibly supportive of this decision, and we anticipate that overnight gating will have a lasting, positive influence on the park and the millions who visit it each year.”
The gates will also allow maintenance crews more flexibility in clearing the roadways following heavy snow activity and allow for closures during special events and emergency situations when evacuation would be deemed necessary. The gates will only be utilized outside of the park’s operational hours and during permitted special events and emergency situations.
