COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The City of Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services department is installing gates at all of the roadway access points surrounding Garden of the Gods Park. Once installed, the gates will allow for the implementation of overnight gate closures that will prevent illegal, after-hour vehicular traffic within Garden of the Gods Park.
“We strongly believe the installation and implementation of this gate system will benefit the long-term health and safety of Garden of the Gods Park, the most visited and one of the most beloved parks in our city,” said Kurt Schroeder, park maintenance and operations manager. “These gates will also give our maintenance crews more flexibility in clearing the roadways following heavy snow activity and allow for closures during special events and emergency situations where evacuation would be deemed necessary.”
While four gates are already installed within the park, five more are needed to successfully implement road closures. New gate installation will begin Wednesday. Once all of the remaining gates have been installed, the parks department expects after-hour gate closures to begin in late August or early September.
Garden of the Gods is free and open to the public daily between the hours of 5 a.m.-10 p.m. from May 1-Oct. 31, and 5 a.m.-9 p.m. from Nov. 1-April 30. The gates will only be utilized outside of the park’s operational hours and during permitted special events and emergency situations.
