The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department is temporarily closing several trails in Red Rock Canyon Open Space while Colorado Parks and Wildlife tracks an aggressive bear. The bear confronted a hiker and two dogs Thursday afternoon near the Section 16 Trailhead. There were no serious injuries.

The following trails will remain closed until further notice while wildlife officials conduct their search: Section 16 Trailhead, Palmer Loop Trail and the southern end of Red Rock Canyon. Trail closure signs are posted, and users are asked to comply with the posted closures and avoid the area until the search ends.

The incident offers an important safety reminder that we share our parks, trails and open spaces with wildlife. This video offers safety tips for hiking in bear country. CPW also offers many Bear Aware tips on its website.
