On Thursday, June 4, 2020, at approximately 4:59 A.M., the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) was notified of a traffic crash at the intersection of South Academy Boulevard and East Fountain Boulevard. When officers arrived on the scene, they located two involved vehicles, a semi-trailer truck and a Ford sedan. Two occupants of the Ford sedan, 19-year-old Matthew K. Guyon of Ft. Carson and 21-year-old Quentin L. Jones of Ft. Carson, died as a result of the injuries they sustained in this crash. A third occupant of the Ford, an adult male was transported local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the semi-trailer truck remained on the scene and was uninjured. The Colorado Springs Fire Department also responded to the scene.
The investigation revealed that the semi-trailer truck was traveling eastbound on East Fountain Boulevard through the intersection of South Academy Boulevard with the green light. The Ford sedan was traveling southbound on South Academy Boulevard at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at the red light, traveling through the intersection and striking the side of the semi-trailer truck. Both Mr. Guyon and Mr. Jones were wearing their seatbelts.
At this time, speed is being considered a factor in this crash. Due to the nature of the incident, the CSPD’s Major Crash Team responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation. No charges have been filed and the investigation into this incident is ongoing.
This is the 12th and 13th traffic-related fatality in Colorado Springs in 2020. At this time last year, there were 17 traffic fatalities in Colorado Springs.
