The Blodgett Peak Open Space has 167 acres of open space, trails, and wildlife habitat. Once part of the Blodgett Ranch, the Blodgett Peak Open Space area is home to many animal species and vegetation species. Dominating this area are the ponderosa pine, Douglas fir and scrub oak. This land is also home to peregrine falcons. Once placed on the endangered species list, these birds fly freely throughout the Blodgett Open Space. Also unique to this area are the geological rock features. Throughout the open space there is a variety of rock sedimentation, including Manitou Limestone, Fountain Formation and Pierre Shale. The Rampart Range fault separates the sedimentary bedrock from the granite.
Where is Blodgett Peak Open Space located?
From Colorado Springs, take I-25 north to the Garden of the Gods Exit. Exit west. Heading west, turn right at Centennial Boulevard. Head north on Centennial. After passing Vindicator Road, Centennial Boulevard will turn into Woodmen Road. Continue on Woodmen Road, Blodgett Peak Open Space will be on the left-hand side of the road.
Interim Use Plan
Plan Approved (April 11, 2019)
The Blodgett Open Space Interim Use Plan was unanimously approved on April 11th, 2019 by the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Advisory Board. A copy of the presentation can be found here. About the Plan
The City of Colorado Springs Trails, Open Space and Parks (TOPS) program recently acquired 64 acres of property for Open Space as an expansion to Blodgett Open Space. The new property is immediately adjacent and south of the existing Blodgett Open Space and located west of the intersection of W. Woodmen Rd and Blodgett Ranch Dr.
As a means to make the property available for public use, the Parks Department seeks to develop an Interim Use Plan to establish the short term use on the property until a more robust master planning process can begin for all of Blodgett Open Space. The Interim Use Plan includes providing:
- public access to and through the new open space,
- the creation of a small gravel trailhead parking lot near Woodmen Rd,
- Park Ranger and maintenance use of the old horse barn,
- the construction of approximately 1,500 linear feet of single track trail and improving the land,
- fence repair on the eastern and southern property,
- Management on the property through the TOPS Stewardship program.
On January 31st, 2019 the Parks Department held a neighborhood meeting to present, discuss and collect public feedback of the Interim Use Plan for the management and public access of the newly acquired open space.

Based on the feedback the gravel trailhead was well supported with significant concerns about unwanted activities happening after hours when the open space is closed. There were numerous mentions for the parking lot to bet gated and locked after hours.
The Blodgett Open Space Interim Use Plan was presented to the TOPS Working Committee and the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Advisory Board in early February. Feedback was provided by the boards and several citizens in attendance. There was support for plan to create a trailhead with suggestions to staff to research opportunities to increase police patrols of the area at night to reduce potential issues. Additionally, staff will be able to monitor the parking area and see if they warrant the need for locked gates after hours.

The Parks Department will present the recommended plan to the TOPS Working Committee on Wednesday March 6th, 2019 at 7:30 am and to the Parks Advisory Board on April 11, 2019 at 7:30 am for consideration by the two boards. Both meetings will be held at the Parks Administration Building at 1401 Recreation Way, Colorado Springs CO, 80905. The public will be able to comment on the recommended plan prior to the Parks Board’s vote.
Pending the outcome of the Parks Board vote, the construction of the trailhead, trails and fencing would begin in March and be completed by early summer. Land management of the property would be ongoing.
