In early 2020, and in accordance with established department policy, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) conducted an audit of felony investigations resulting in an arrest or issuance of a warrant.
During the audit, CSPD discovered a small number of felony investigations assigned to the Metro Vice, Narcotics, & Intelligence (MVNI) Division in 2018 and 2019 may not have been properly discovered to the District Attorney’s Office. CSPD believes less than 150 criminal cases are involved, and we are working with the District Attorney to notify the affected defendants and their counsel. CSPD and the District Attorney will notify and provide electronic discovery to the appropriate defense counsel or defendants via established methods.
In March 2020, CSPD will complete a department-wide audit of 2018 and 2019 felony investigations where an arrest was made or an arrest warrant was issued. If potential issues are discovered in any of those investigations, they will be handled in the same manner.
Please do not contact CSPD or the District Attorney to inquire if your case is involved in the audit. You or your defense counsel will be notified if your case(s) were potentially impacted. To obtain further information on the discovery process, please visit the website of the District Attorney’s Office (http://www.4thjudicialda.com). Lieutenant John Koch, Metro VNI Division, #719-444-7506, VNIFilings@coloradosprings.gov, may be contacted with questions regarding CSPD’s work on this issue.
