On Monday, January 13, 2020, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) responded to multiple stabbings in the downtown area.
At approximately 1:33 A.M., CSPD officers were dispatched to the Midland Trail near 8th and Limit Street for a reported stabbing. When officers arrived on scene, they located two victims with stab wound injuries. While conducting a search of the area for the suspect, who reportedly fled the scene, officers located several more victims on walking trails through the America the Beautiful Park. Victims and witnesses reported varying last known locations of the suspect, and additional officers quickly responded to aid in searching for the suspect.
Around 2:12 A.M., the CSPD received reports that the suspect had stabbed more victims and was in the area of Tejon and Boulder Street. When officers arrived, two stabbing victims had physically detained the suspect and officers were able to take the adult male suspect into custody. The Homicide/Assault Unit responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation.
In total, eight victims were transported to area hospitals for sharp force trauma injuries. It is believed the object used in the stabbings was an edged weapon. The attacks appear to be random and there is no known relationship between the suspect and the victims at this time.
The suspect's name and photograph will be released at a later time pending the conclusion of the investigation.
CSPD PIO Lt. Sokolik will be available on 1/13/2020 at 6:00 P.M. in front of the Police Operations Center at 705 S. Nevada Avenue to provide an on camera statement to the media. It will also be live-streamed on the CSPD Twitter page (@CSPDPIO).
