Update

The three officers involved in this incident are Officer Lucas Aragon, Officer Cole Jones, and Sergeant Mark Keller. Officer Aragon has been employed with the Colorado Springs Police Department since July 10, 2017, and is currently assigned to the Sand Creek Division, Shift II. Officer Jones has been employed with the Colorado Springs Police Department since July 10, 2017, and is currently assigned to the Sand Creek Division, Shift II. Sergeant Keller has been employed with the Colorado Springs Police Department since February 4, 2003, and is currently assigned to the Sand Creek Division, Shift II.

On Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at approximately 5:48 PM, officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department responded to a report of a suspicious male walking with a gun in the 2200 block of Monterey Road.  As officers contacted the male party, he got into a vehicle and fled the scene.  Officers did not pursue the vehicle. 

A short time later, three officers encountered the suspect in the 3100 block of East Fountain Boulevard. During the encounter, at least one officer fired a shot at the suspect. The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.  The officers were uninjured and have been placed on routine administrative leave in accordance with CSPD policy.

The suspect has been identified as Joshua Vigil, DOB: 02/09/81.  The cause and manner of death will be determined by the Coroner's Office once they have all the information to make a ruling.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is the lead investigative agency for this officer involved shooting.  This is an ongoing investigation and all updates will only be provided by the Sheriff's Office Public Information Office.
