On August 1, 2018 at approximately 11:15 am, Sand Creek Patrol Officers were in the area of East Fountain Boulevard and South Chelton Road on an unrelated call for service when they observed a black Jeep that matched the description of a vehicle wanted in connection to several recent personal robberies. Prior to officers making contact with the Jeep, the driver ran the red light for southbound Chelton Road, colliding with two other vehicles in the intersection. The driver of the Jeep fled on foot. Following a brief foot pursuit by Sand Creek Patrol officers, the suspect driver was taken into custody. The suspect driver was transported to an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The other two drivers involved in the traffic accident received minor injuries.
Detectives from the Colorado Springs Police Department Robbery Unit responded and assumed the investigation. Critical evidence was recovered at the scene of the wreck assisting in the investigation. The aforementioned black Jeep was stolen out of Colorado Springs and was bearing a stolen license plate.
The suspect that was taken into custody has not yet been identified.
This is still an active ongoing criminal investigation and we are requesting the public to stay out of the area and to expect traffic delays for Eastbound Fountain Boulevard.
