On February 20, 2019, the Safeway pharmacy located at 6520 South Academy Boulevard was robbed at gunpoint. A male armed with a black semi-automatic handgun jumped the pharmacy counter and demanded drugs. The suspect then placed the narcotics into a backpack, jumped back over the counter, and exited the store. The suspect entered the passenger side of a red Chevrolet Colorado truck that was waiting for him and the vehicle fled the area. The Colorado Springs Police Department’s Robbery Unit responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation.
On March 8, 2019, the Robbery Unit arrested 52 year old Mark Von Smith and 38 year old Rom Yous for Aggravated Robbery of a Controlled Substance, a Class Two Felony. Both individuals are residents of El Paso County. Over the course of the investigation, numerous search warrants were executed at different locations, resulting in the recovery of multiple items of evidence including three handguns and more than 1,000 pills of controlled narcotics.
