On July 9, 2018, at approximately 5:16 AM, the Colorado Springs Police Department was notified of a one vehicle rollover crash in the 2400 block of North Powers Boulevard. During this crash, two of the four occupants in the SUV were thrown from the vehicle and injured. It was determined the driver, 18 year old Luis Garcia of Colorado Springs, was driving under the influence of an unknown substance. The Colorado Springs Police Departments Major Accident Unit assumed responsibility for this investigation.
During this investigation, it was determined the SUV was traveling southbound on Powers Boulevard when Mr. Garcia lost control of the vehicle as he attempted to change lanes and drove into the grassy median. When Mr. Garcia attempted to return to the road, he overcorrected, resulting in the vehicle rolling over. One of the occupants was ejected from the vehicle and sustained serious, but non-life threatening injuries. The SUV, a gold-colored Cadillac Escalade, was determined to be recently stolen.
Mr. Garcia was treated at a nearby hospital for minor injuries and was subsequently arrested. He was charged with Vehicular Assault (a class 4 felony), Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft (a class 5 felony), DUI (a misdemeanor), and Driving with Excessive Alcohol (a misdemeanor). Mr. Garcia was booked into the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center. Follow Twitter for photo.
