Original Release

On Monday, November 25, 2019, at approximately 1:50 P.M., Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) detectives located 35-year-old Randy Ray Bishop, who was wanted on several outstanding warrants.

Bishop, who was driving in a vehicle, fled from officers and crashed in the 1800 block of North Circle Drive. Detectives quickly detained Bishop and transported him to UC Memorial Health Hospital to undergo a medical clearance before being booked into the Criminal Justice Training Center. While receiving medical care, Bishop fled on foot inside the hospital. A CSPD detective pursed Bishop down a hall where a physical altercation ensued, during which time Bishop assaulted the detective and took control of his firearm. At least one shot was then fired by Bishop.

CSPD received a call of shots fired and an active shooter at the hospital at approximately 3:16 P.M. This initial information was incorrect. This was not an active shooter situation.

No medical staff or patients were injured during this incident; however, the detective sustained injuries that required medical attention. Memorial Hospital Staff immediately followed procedure and placed the hospital into lockdown to ensure the safety of their patients and staff.

Bishop then stole a silver colored BMW SUV from the hospital parking lot and fled the scene. Officers are currently looking for Bishop’s whereabouts. While there is no immediate threat to the public, the CSPD does consider Bishop to be armed and dangerous.

This is still an on-going investigation. Anyone with information or is a witness to this investigation is asked to call the Colorado Springs Police Department at (719) 444-7000; or if you wish to remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers Tip Line at (719) 634-STOP (7867) or 1-800-222-8477.
