On Friday, April 6th, 2018, at approximately 12:51PM, officers of the Colorado Springs Police Department responded to a traffic collision involving a Mountain Metropolitan Transit bus and a Toyota 4Runner. The collision occurred at the intersection of East Hancock Expressway and West Monica Drive.
The investigation was conducted by the Major Accident Unit and revealed the Toyota 4Runner was travelling westbound on East Hancock Expressway when it turned left in front of a Mountain Metropolitan Transit bus travelling eastbound on East Hancock Expressway. The Toyota 4Runner then struck a tree and came to a stop.
The Toyota 4Runner was occupied by a single individual who was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The bus was occupied by six individuals, one of whom had a minor injury.
On Saturday, May 5, 2018, at approximately 8:16AM, the occupant of the Toyota 4Runner succumbed to his injuries. No charges are expected in this incident.
This is the 16th traffic-related fatality in Colorado Springs in 2018. At this time last year, there were 11 traffic-related fatalities.
