On July 9, 2019, at approximately 6:29 PM, officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department observed a serious injury traffic crash in the 500 block of West Colorado Avenue. Officers were traveling eastbound behind a red Oldsmobile SUV when they witnessed the SUV strike two legally parked vehicles along the right side of the road. Before officers could activate their emergency lights, the driver accelerated in an attempt to flee the crash.
Officers activated their lights and siren and attempted to stop the vehicle. While fleeing, the SUV struck a Ford van in the 500 block of West Colorado Avenue. The van’s driver was in the process of unloading their vehicle when the SUV struck both the driver and the van. The van was parked in the outside through lane with its hazard lights flashing at the time of the crash.
Officers immediately rendered first aid to the van’s driver, with the assistance of an off-duty nurse, until emergency medical crews arrived and assumed medical care. The victim was then transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious, but non-life threatening, injuries. The driver of the SUV, identified as 30-year-old Tara D. Studer of Colorado Springs, was not injured in the crash.
The Major Crash Team responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation. It was determined that Ms. Studer was driving under the influence of alcohol and she was subsequently arrested for Vehicular Assault (a felony), DUI, Reckless Driving, and Driving Under Restraint and booked into the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center on these charges. This investigation is continuing.
