On Friday, November 15, 2019, at approximately 2:23 PM, the Colorado Springs Police Department was notified of a crash involving an automobile and a bicyclist in the 3500 block of North Cascade Ave. Upon the arrival of responding officers, it was found the bicyclist was suffering from serious injuries. He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The Major Crash Team responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation.
The investigation revealed the bicyclist, 49 year old Heiko Leach of Colorado Springs, was traveling southbound in the 3500 block of North Cascade Avenue when he was struck from behind by a southbound Chevrolet sedan. Mr. Leach was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The Chevrolet continued southbound after the initial collision and then ran off the left side of the road striking a sign post. Officers contacted the driver of the Chevrolet who also suffered serious injuries.
Mr. Leach succumbed to his injuries on the evening of November 15th. The investigation into this crash is continuing and there have been no charges filed at this time. Mr. Leach is the third bicyclist killed in Colorado Springs this year. He is also the 40th traffic fatality of 2019 in the city. In 2018, there were four bicyclists killed in traffic crashes in Colorado Springs.
