On July 29, 2018, at approximately 11:02 AM, officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department responded to the intersection of Hancock Expressway and South Academy Boulevard, in reference to a crash involving an automobile and a pedestrian. Upon arrival, officers found the female pedestrian, 36 year old Marjorie Mestas of Colorado Springs, suffered serious injuries in the collision. She was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The Major Accident Unit responded to assume the investigation due to the seriousness of the injuries. It was determined that speed, drugs, and alcohol are not factors in this incident. Investigation revealed that a blue sedan was traveling northbound on South Academy Boulevard when it struck Ms. Mestas, who was attempting to cross South Academy Boulevard at the intersection with Hancock Expressway. According to witnesses on scene, the sedan had a green light.
On August 2, 2018, Ms. Mestas succumbed to the injuries she suffered in this crash. No charges are anticipated in this case.
Ms. Mestas is the 28th traffic related fatality in Colorado Springs this year and the seventh pedestrian to be killed. At this time last year, there were 22 fatalities, six of which were pedestrians.
