On Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at approximately 5:16 AM, the Colorado Springs Police Department was notified of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Maizeland Road and Wold Avenue. Upon arrival of the first officers, it was discovered the driver of one of the vehicles, a silver Cadillac, was pinned in his vehicle. After this driver was extricated from his car by Colorado Springs Fire Department personnel, he was transported to a nearby hospital. The driver, 41-year-old William Harrington of Colorado Springs, subsequently died as a result of these injuries.
The Colorado Springs Police Department’s Major Crash Team responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for this investigation. It was determined the Cadillac was attempting a left hand turn onto westbound Maizeland Road when it was struck by a black Nissan SUV which was travelling eastbound on Maizeland Road. The Nissan was found to be travelling faster than the posted speed limit of 30 MPH. In addition, the driver of the Nissan, 30-year-old Vanessa D. Gonzales of Colorado Springs, was found to be intoxicated at the time of the crash. She was uninjured and subsequently arrested for DUI and Vehicular Homicide. Follow Twitter for release of photo.
This is the 11th traffic fatality in Colorado Springs this year. At this time last year there were nine traffic fatalities in the city.
