On Sunday, September 1, 2019, at approximately 8:42 P.M., the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) was notified of a serious crash involving a pickup truck and a motorcycle in the 3100 block of North Academy Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers located a deceased adult male. The CSPD Major Crash Team responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation.
After preliminary examination, it appears that a motorcycle was travelling south in the center lane of North Academy Blvd passing Parkmoor Village Drive, when it was struck from behind by a white pickup truck driving at a high rate of speed. The pickup truck continued south on Academy Boulevard for approximately 600 to 700 feet, dragging the motorcycle. During that time, the motorcyclist, an adult male, was ejected from his vehicle onto the roadway. A white minivan also travelling south on Academy Boulevard then struck the motorcyclist while he lay in the road. The motorcyclist died on scene.
The driver of the white pickup truck, an adult male, was arrested for DUI and faces potential vehicular homicide charges. This will be the 33rd traffic related fatality in Colorado Springs in 2019. At this time last year, there were 34 traffic fatalities in the city.
