On January 17, 2019, at approximately 11:54 PM, the Colorado Springs Police Department was notified of a two vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of North Academy Boulevard and Palmer Park Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers learned of a deceased male on scene. The Colorado Springs Police Department’s Major Accident Unit assumed responsibility for this investigation.
It was determined that a gold 2000 Chevrolet Sedan, driven by 31 year old Vincent Leon Meisman of Colorado Springs, was traveling westbound on Palmer Park Boulevard approaching Academy Boulevard; and there was a gray Honda Civic traveling southbound on North Academy Boulevard approaching Palmer Park Boulevard. Witnesses stated the Chevrolet ran the red light for westbound traffic at Palmer Park Boulevard and North Academy Boulevard. The front of the Honda struck the passenger side of the Chevrolet. The passenger in the Chevrolet, 36 year old Joseph Tipton of Colorado Springs, was deceased on scene. Mr. Meisman was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. The driver of the Honda was not injured.
Mr. Meisman is suspected of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and was subsequently arrested for this incident for Careless Driving and Vehicular Homicide.
This is the third traffic-related fatality in Colorado Springs this year. At this time last year there were five traffic-related fatalities in the City of Colorado Springs.
