On Thursday, May 30, 2019, at approximately 10:54 AM, the Colorado Springs Police Department was notified of a two vehicle crash at the intersection of S. Circle Drive and Verde Drive. Upon arrival, officers determined an Acura was traveling southbound on S. Circle Drive and attempted an unprotected left turn onto eastbound Verde Drive in front of a northbound Cadillac.
The Cadillac struck the Acura on the Acura’s passenger side, causing severe damage to both vehicles. The front seat passenger of the Cadillac, 105 year old Leone Darnold of Colorado Springs, was seriously injured and was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The driver of the Cadillac and two passengers riding in the Acura suffered minor injuries from the wreck. The investigation determined that speed and alcohol/drug impairment were not factors in this crash. All occupants of both vehicles were wearing their seatbelts.
On June 5, 2019 Ms. Darnold died as a result of the injuries she suffered in this crash. This is the 17th traffic fatality in Colorado Springs in 2019. At this time in 2018, there were 20 traffic fatalities. The investigation into this matter is continuing.
