On September 5, 2018, at approximately 9:36 PM, the Colorado Springs Police Department was notified of a crash involving a Lexus sedan and a bicyclist near the intersection of South Academy Boulevard and Fountain Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers found the bicyclist had suffered serious injuries and was subsequently transported to a local hospital for treatment. The Colorado Springs Police Department’s Major Accident Unit responded to the scene to assume responsibility for the investigation into this crash. The occupants of the Lexus were not injured.
The investigation determined the bicyclist, 25 year old Stetson Hogue of Colorado Springs, was attempting to cross South Academy Boulevard westbound when he was struck by a northbound Lexus sedan. Mr. Hogue was not wearing reflective clothing or a protective helmet, did not have any lights on his bicycle, and was attempting to cross South Academy Boulevard, mid-block, in an unlit area. Mr. Hogue later died as a result of his injuries.
The driver of the Lexus was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and speed is not believed to be a factor in this case. At this time no charges are anticipated.
Mr. Hogue is the 35th traffic fatality in Colorado Springs in 2018 and the third bicycle related fatality. There were 27 total traffic fatalities and one bicycle fatality at this time last year.
