On September 10, 2018, at approximately 9:34 PM, the Colorado Springs Police Department was notified of a traffic crash on the Woodmen Road bridge over North Academy Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers found the driver of one of the involved vehicles was deceased. The two occupants of the other involved vehicle were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. The Colorado Springs Police Department’s Major Accident Unit responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for this investigation.
Investigation revealed that a black Toyota sedan was traveling westbound on Woodmen Road when it struck a white Dodge pick-up truck, which was attempting a left hand turn from eastbound Woodmen Road onto northbound North Academy Boulevard. It was determined the Toyota was driving at an excessive speed and ran a red light, striking the Dodge which was making a legal left hand turn. The driver of the Toyota, 32 year old Benjamin Curley of Colorado Springs, died as a result of the wreck. No charges are anticipated in this investigation.
Mr. Curley is the 37th traffic fatality in Colorado Springs this year. At this time last year, there were 27 traffic fatalities.
