Update: Shooting and Carjacking Southwest & Downtown & Shooting Investigation 4300 Block of Fountain Springs Grove

Update: On February 22, 2020, at approximately 10:04 A.M., officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) responded to the 3700 Block of Westmeadow Drive for a reported shooting. Upon arrival, officers located a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to the hospital with life-threating injuries.

Around the same time, there was a carjacking reported just east of the shooting in the 3700 Block of Penny Point. In that incident, a male suspect stole the victim’s vehicle, which was a black Dodge Journey bearing Colorado plate 237-WKQ.

While detectives from the CSPD’s Violent Crimes Section were investigating the aforementioned incidents, at approximately 3:41 P.M officers responded to the 200 Block of South Wahsatch Avenue for a reported shooting. Upon arrival, officers located a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to the hospital with serious, but non-life-threating injuries.

While officers were arriving in the area of the shooting, CSPD received reports that a male was shooting at cars in the area of South Wahsatch Avenue and East Costilla Street. It was reported that that same male suspect was able to steal a green Buick LeSabre, bearing Colorado plate 350-UOM and was last seen heading east on East Costilla Street.

On February 22, 2020, at approximately 6:11 P.M. officers with the CSPD responded to the 4300 Block of Fountain Springs Grove for a reported shooting. Upon arrival, officers located a deceased adult male with an apparent gunshot wound.

Based on the independent investigations conducted by the responding detectives and officers, there is evidence to support that all of the aforementioned investigations are related.

On February 23, 2020, detectives were notified that the victim who sustained life-threatening injuries from the shooting that occurred on Westmeadow Drive succumbed to his injuries. The identities of the deceased victims will be released after they have been positively identified by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office. The Coroner’s Office will make the official cause and manner of death determination of each victim from the separate shooting events.

Also on February 23, 2020, detectives from CSPD’s Homicide/Assault Unit identified and obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect. The suspect has been identified as 27-year-old Kyree Davon Howard-Walker of Colorado Springs. Howard-Walker is currently wanted for two counts of Murder in the First Degree, Attempted Murder in the First Degree, two counts of Aggravated Robbery, Attempted Aggravated Robbery and Menacing. Howard-Walker is not in custody and should be considered armed and dangerous. A photo of Howard-Walker is attached to this press release. It will also be released on the CSPD twitter account.

The CSPD received numerous tips as a result of the previous news release that contained several photographs of the suspect. The CSPD is appreciative of the information that was provided and the assistance from the public.  Homicide/Assault Unit detectives also located and recovered the stolen Buick LeSabre. The black Dodge Journey that was stolen in the 3700 Block of Penny Point is still outstanding.

All of these investigations are active and further details will be released in the future, as appropriate.

The CSPD is asking for assistance from the public regarding these investigations. Detectives have identified a suspect. That person is described as a light-complected black male, mid-20s, 5’08” to 6’00”, 180-200 pounds, short dark hair, light facial hair that is dark. The suspect was last seen wearing a dark short-sleeved shirt, blue jeans, and light-colored shoes. He should be considered armed and dangerous. The Colorado Springs Police Department’s Violent Crimes Section responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for this investigation. While the Coroner’s Office will make the official cause and manner of death determination, this death is being investigated as a homicide and continues to be an active investigation.
