FULL HIKE SCHEDULE JULY 2019 BIO BLITZ

All of these hikes will leave from Red Rock Canyon Pavilion.  Participants should wear good hiking shoes, bring plenty of water and sun protection. ALL hikes will have a 20 person participant limit.

Friday, July 19 Hikes

Moth Blacklighting

The Mile High Bug Club will be setting up blacklights to attract and document moths in Red Rock Canyon. Grab a jacket and find out what surprising things flutter in the night. There’s more out there than you think! Meet at the Pavilion.

SATURDAY, JULY 20 HIKES

Bat Trapping and/or Acoustics

Come watch biologists from Colorado Parks and Wildlife as they trap and/or do acoustic recordings of bats to determine what species we have in Red Rock Canyon. Bring a chair and a blanket and join us for a beautiful evening under the stars.

Take Flight at Red Rock Canyon Open Space

Join our park rangers to learn about birds that call Colorado Springs home. Adventure through the vast habitat of Red Rock Canyon Open Space to learn bird identification and fun facts about the ornithology of the area. It will be a real “hoot”!

Let your mind blossom as you join our park rangers to explore the natural beauty of native wildflowers, their naturalized cousins and their invasive enemies. Find out what role each of these plants plays in the Red Rock Canyon Open Space ecosystem and how your own backyard creates an impact.

Creepy Crawlies and Bathing Bugs

We hope insects, spiders, and other creepy crawly animals do not “bug” you! On this hike, learn about the important role those small members of our community play at Red Rock Canyon Open Space and how they have adapted to survive nearly everywhere- including underwater!

Green Giants of Red Rock Canyon Open Space

Take a walk through Red Rock Canyon Open Space with our Park Rangers to engage with the importance of the woody perennials in our ecosystem and community.  On this hike, you will take a closer look at our friendly green giants and will not only learn how to identify the trees of this space, but will also learn a little history about these trees and the wildlife inhabiting them. We hope you will “leaf” this hike with a strong appreciation for our trees!

Trails by Design 

Learn how trails are designed and the reasons why on this hike through Red Rock Canyon Open Space. This talk will focus on the importance of building trails with wildlife and the environment in mind as well as trail sustainability.

Geology of Red Rock Canyon Open Space

Join a Park Ranger and learn about 250 million years of geology. See solidified riverbeds, petrified sand dunes, and evidence of ancient seaways. Find out what sort of creatures lived in Red Rock Canyon Open Space millions of years ago and how the hogbacks formed. It would be “Gneiss” if you joined us!

HOW TO JOIN

  1. Download the FREE iNaturalist app and make an account.
  2. Click on projects, search “BioBlitz Red Rock Canyon” and join!
  3. Register to participate in one or several BioBlitz activities  
  1. Take photos of WILD plants and animals.
    1. Be sure to allow for location services to be on. 
    2. This will provide the most accurate data to be collected.
  2. Upload your photos.
  3. Add your observations to share with the iNaturalist community.
  4. Learn more as your photos get identified, and help others by identifying their observations!
