Specialized Enforcement Units
Tactical Enforcement Unit
The Tactical Enforcement Unit (TEU) is sometimes referred to as SWAT. This unit provides emergency response to high-risk calls for service. They often use tools like the Bearcat, an armored tactical rescue vehicle, and the Rook, another large armored vehicle, to safely rescue victims or to ensure safety of medical personnel. In addition to emergency response, the Tactical Enforcement Unit also helps to serve search and arrest warrants for high-risk situations.
Drone (UAS) Unit
The CSPD drone unit works with a variety of other Specialized Enforcement Teams and Patrol units to assist with investigations. Drones are used to survey crash scenes, and potential crime scenes, safely enter and search buildings before officers enter, or search for people like suspects or missing persons. The drone unit offers officers more safety and insight when conducting investigations, especially when it is not safe to use a human or canine office.
K9 Unit
The CSPD K9 consists of 14 dog and handler teams that respond to a variety of calls for service and have several different specialties including narcotics detection, explosives detection, and apprehension. These dogs assist the Tactical Enforcement Unit, as well as patrol units, to find narcotics or suspects and help bring them into custody.
Major Crash Team
The Major Crash Team is responsible for investigating any traffic crash that involves death or serious bodily injury. They respond to calls for service for serious crashes and process the scene through a variety of tools including drones. They use physics and mathematical equations to determine how fast a car was going, the actions of drivers and pedestrians, and recreate the scene of the crash digitally.
Motors Unit
The Motorcycle Unit for CSPD is responsible for a variety of things but mainly focuses on detailed traffic enforcement throughout the city. They work with the major crash team and traffic unit, as well as through community concerns, to target areas of high speed and unsafe traffic habits to ensure traffic enforcement is done in a strategic way. This unit is also responsible for helping with special events like parades, traffic control for large community events, and VIP escorts.
Regional Explosives Unit
The Regional Explosives Unit, or the Bomb Squad, investigates calls for service involving arson or potential explosives. The bomb technicians work, along with their canine partners, to determine if an item contains explosives and then use their technical knowledge to render the item safe. They also assist with special events like parades, or other large gatherings, to do proactive sweeps to ensure an area is safe.
Protective Security Section
The Protective Security Section provides emergency response and security services to CSPD. There are three units in this section: the Municipal Security Unit which includes the Mayor Protection Detail, the Airport Police Unit, and the liaison with the Office of Emergency Management.
