Original News Release:

On September 17, 2023, at 2:02 AM, CSPD was notified of a single automobile crash in the 800 block of East Platte Avenue. Emergency personnel arrived on the scene and transported the three vehicle occupants to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. One of the passengers later died due to his injuries, and one continues to be treated for life-threatening injuries.

The vehicle was traveling eastbound on East Platte Avenue in the 800 block when the vehicle lost control and struck the center median curb, then a tree in the median, rolled over, and ejected the passengers before coming to rest in the median.

Based on this information, the Colorado Springs Police Department’s Major Crash Team responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation. The driver received medical treatment and was later booked into the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center regarding charges relating to this crash investigation.

On September 18, 2023, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy of the deceased passenger from this crash. The deceased passenger has been identified as 22-year-old Randy Castro.

Speed and impairment appear to be contributing factors, and the investigation is ongoing.

This is the 33rd fatal crash in Colorado Springs this year. Colorado Springs had 40 fatal traffic crashes at the same time last year. In the past 365 days, there have been 49 fatal crashes in Colorado Springs.
