The City of Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Department (PRCS) has been awarded a $250,000 Non-Motorized Trails Grant through a multi-agency partnership that includes Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) the Colorado Lottery and the Federal Recreational Trails Program (RPT). This funding will support vital improvements within Austin Bluffs Open Space, focusing on trailhead improvements, trail connectivity, and enhanced wayfinding for visitors.

"Austin Bluffs Open Space is a cherished landmark in our community, offering breathtaking vistas and unique geological features," said David Deitemeyer, Trails, Open Space and Parks senior program administrator. "We greatly appreciate the support from Colorado Parks and Wildlife in making this project a reality as this investment will enhance access to the popular hiking destination and help preserve the natural beauty of our open spaces for future generations to enjoy."

This grant will be utilized to construct nearly 2.5 miles of multi-use, multi-directional single-track trails in Austin Bluffs Open Space, including the development of the .5 mile "Enlightenment Hiking-Only Trail." This dedicated hiking trail will lead to the summit of Pulpit Rock, incorporating stone steps designed to promote sustainability, reduce maintenance costs, and improve the overall user experience.

In addition to developing new trails, the project includes decommissioning and restoring approximately 4,100 linear feet of rogue and illegal trails to ensure the integrity of the ecosystem. The grant will also fund essential trailhead enhancements in two main parking lots, improving parking efficiency, convenience and open space access for visitors. This will involve the installation of curb and gutter to better organize and accommodate open space and trail users, complemented by the implementation of informative trailhead kiosks at both parking areas.

This project moves the department closer to finalizing the 2018 Austin Bluffs Open Space Master Plan. Enhancements include the successful completion of nearly 22 miles of sustainable open space trails, the improvement of the south and north trailheads with gravel parking for 94 vehicles, and the addition of new kiosks and wayfinding signage. The remaining work to fully implement the master plan’s recommendations involves drainage improvements in Pulpit Rock Creek.
