The City of Colorado Springs asks residents to offer their feedback on possible names for the new Colorado Springs Senior Center. Construction is expected to begin in August on the new building, which is envisioned as a safer, larger, more accommodating facility for patrons.

“Many communities have renamed their senior centers to more accurately reflect the current lifestyle of residents in this age demographic, as well as the programmatic offerings,” said Ryan Trujillo, the City’s deputy chief of staff. “We know our senior center is an important place for community members, and we’re excited to build a new facility with intent and purpose. We believe the timing is right to thoughtfully engage with community members on the center’s name.”

A survey with possible names launched today and remains open through March 24, 2023. The City’s project team will consider the public’s feedback before it makes a final determination on the name. Options in the survey include:

  • Colorado Springs Senior Center
  • Center for Active Seniors
  • The Encore
  • The Hub at Hancock
  • Other (open-ended, write-in option)

The Senior Center renovation is funded by $8 million from the American Rescue Plan Act. The new center will be built at the corner of N. Hancock Avenue and E. Caramillo Street, just east of the existing building which will be demolished. The site location was selected from four options all within the Golf Acres site based on feedback from current Senior Center patrons, service providers, community members, and other stakeholders. The new site will maximize the available space for parking, improve traffic flow and accessibility, and add more functional outdoor space.

The Colorado Springs Senior Center is owned by the City and operated by the YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region through an innovative partnership. Its mission is to offer quality of life experiences that are creative, social and physical in nature to adults 55 years of age and older.
