Local study shows Garden of the Gods Park contributes $272 million to Colorado Springs’ economy
The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) has released a new report showcasing the significant economic impact of the parks and recreation system in Colorado. According to the report, Colorado’s parks and recreation system generates an impressive $7 billion in economic benefits each year, ranking 6th among all 50 U.S. states.
One of the key contributors to the economic success in Colorado Springs is Garden of the Gods Park, which was recently analyzed by local economist Tatiana Bailey with Data-Driven Economic Strategies in a report commissioned by the Garden of the Gods Foundation. This report found that in 2022, Garden of the Gods Park alone contributed 4,055 jobs to the regional economy with a total employment-related income of $158 million.
“The City of Colorado Springs takes great pride in its park and recreation opportunities as these spaces are essential for promoting physical activity, social interaction and overall well-being,” said Britt Haley, Director of Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services. “Our park system also enhances the quality of life for our residents by generating local jobs and business opportunities, making a significant impact on the Colorado Springs economy.”
As the most visited attraction in the Pikes Peak Region, Garden of the Gods Park welcomes approximately 4.5 million visitors a year. While entry is free for all visitors, the Park nevertheless makes a significant impact on the local economy with a net contribution of $272 million annually.
The NRPA report, developed in partnership with the Center for Regional Analysis at George Mason University, also highlights that operations and capital spending by local parks support 39,666 jobs in Colorado. This is a testament to the vital role parks play in creating and sustaining employment opportunities for local communities.
