On September 6, 2023, at 10:46 PM, members of the Colorado Springs Police Department were dispatched to the area of Astrozon Boulevard and Hancock Expressway regarding a hit-and-run traffic crash.

During our investigation, detectives identified 28-year-old Breanna Smith as the suspected driver. An arrest warrant was obtained for Ms. Smith’s arrest on December 1, 2023.  On December 2, 2023, Ms. Smith turned herself in and was booked into the El Paso County Jail.  Ms. Smith’s charges include Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving Death and careless Driving Resulting in Death.

Bicycle Rider Identified in Fatal Crash from the 3500 block of Astrozon Boulevard

On September 6, 2023, at 10:46 PM, members of the Colorado Springs Police Department were dispatched to the area of Astrozon Boulevard and Hancock Expressway regarding a hit-and-run traffic crash.

Initial information indicated a bicyclist was struck by a vehicle, and the vehicle had left the scene. On arrival, officers located the bicyclist and determined he was deceased.

Due to the nature of the crash, the Major Crash Team was notified, responded to the scene, and assumed the investigation. The investigation showed the bicyclist was traveling southbound in the northbound bike lane when an unidentified vehicle struck the bicycle.

On September 7, 2023, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy on the deceased bicycle rider. The bicycle rider has been identified as 28-year-old Eduardo Ibanez-Charco.

This is the 32nd fatal traffic crash in Colorado Springs this year. At this same time last year, there were 40 fatal traffic crashes in Colorado Springs and 48 fatal crashes in the past 365 days.
