Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services will begin formalizing an official trailhead at Austin Bluffs Open Space to improve the parking efficiency and provide a safe recreational experience. Located north of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) baseball complex on N. Nevada Ave., the current lot has been informally used for several years for access to Pulpit Rock and Austin Bluffs Open Space.
“With a growing number of visitors recreating in Austin Bluffs Open Space, this project will increase parking availability with designated spaces to provider easier and safer access to the open space,” said David Deitemeyer, sr. landscape architect for Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services. “We are committed to cultivating a positive outdoor experience while also preserving and maintaining the surrounding natural areas. The formalization of the lot will also reduce the amount of vehicles parking in native areas, which will enhance and protect the sensitive environment.”
Phase one of the project, set to begin this week, includes earth work to create a level gravel parking area that will provide approximately 55 to 60 spaces. This formal, expanded trailhead is made possible thanks to UCCS for their easement donation to the City of Colorado Springs.
As part of phase one, park staff will also install a trail map, kiosk, and other amenities. Phase two of construction will include a paved parking lot with a total of 100 parking stalls, trailhead plaza and drainage improvements. Final implementation is subject to available funding.
The current lot will temporarily close beginning Monday, Feb. 5. Weather dependent, the parking lot will be opened to the public by the end of Feb. with the remaining work wrapping up at the trailhead by April.
Please note that a portion of the Austin Bluffs Regional Trail will be closed during this project due to construction activity. The North Austin Bluffs Open Space/North Pulpit Rock Trailhead located at 6411 N. Nevada Ave. will remain open and available to the public during this time.
The establishment of this trailhead is in line with the goals set forth in the 2020 Austin Bluffs Open Space Master and Management Plan. These improvements will formalize legal parking, improve parking efficiency and consistency, and provide visitors with a more enjoyable experience while exploring the beautiful open space.
