On January 2, 2024, at approximately 5:22 PM, the Colorado Springs Police Department was dispatched to the 3900 block of Van Teylingen Drive regarding a traffic crash involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian. Upon arrival, officers located a pedestrian in the roadway receiving emergency medical care from the Colorado Springs Fire Department and AMR.
The vehicle stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers. The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital where they succumbed to their injuries sustained as a result of the crash.
Due to the nature of the crash, the Major Crash Team was contacted and responded to the scene to assume the investigation. Neither alcohol nor speed are considered as factors in this investigation. Through the course of the investigation, it was determined the pedestrian was in the roadway, not at a crosswalk when they were struck by the vehicle.
On January 3, 2024, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy on the deceased pedestrian and identified him as 61-year-old Rodney Buttermore.
This was the second traffic fatality this year in Colorado Springs. At this same time last year, there was one traffic fatality. In the last 365 days, there have been 51 traffic fatalities in Colorado Springs.
