On November 22, 2023, at approximately 6:30 PM, the Colorado Springs Police Department received a report of an auto-pedestrian crash in the area of East Platte Avenue and North Academy Boulevard. The pedestrian was believed to be crossing the road where there was no crosswalk. He was transported to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
On November 23, 2023, the El Paso County Coroner’s Officer completed an autopsy on the deceased pedestrian and identified him as 66-year-old Roosevelt Backus.
This was the 47th traffic fatality in Colorado Springs this year. At this time last year, there were 52 fatalities. In the last 365 days, there have been 51 fatalities in Colorado Springs.
