Update
On July 13, 2023, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy of the deceased pedestrian. The pedestrian has been identified as 45-year-old Colorado Springs resident Raynard Terrence Atkins. This is the 25th fatal crash in Colorado Springs this year. At this same time last year, there were 25 fatal crashes in Colorado Springs. In the past 365 days, Colorado Springs has had 56 fatal traffic crashes.

On 07/12/2023 at 4:07 AM, members of the Colorado Springs Police Department, Sand Creek Division, were dispatched to the area of 300 N Academy Blvd regarding a traffic crash involving a pedestrian and a vehicle. Upon arrival, officers determined that the vehicle was traveling north on Academy Blvd. when the vehicle swerved in the roadway and struck a pedestrian on the east side of the street. CSFD and AMR personnel arrived on the scene to attempt to aid the pedestrian. It was determined that the pedestrian died on the scene due to injuries suffered during the crash. Due to the circumstances involved in the investigation, the Major Crash Team was contacted and responded to assume the investigation. Neither speed nor alcohol are believed to be factors in this investigation.
