On Monday, February 27, 2023, members of the Colorado Springs Police Department, Sand Creek Division, responded to the intersection of Cache La Poudre Street and Prairie Road regarding a vehicle versus motorcycle traffic crash. According to initial information, witnesses believed the rider of the motorcycle was deceased. On February 28. 2023, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy of the deceased motorcycle rider. The rider has been identified Mitchell Smith, 26-years-old, and a Colorado Springs resident. This is the tenth traffic fatality in Colorado Springs this year. At this same time last year, Colorado Springs had three traffic fatalities. In the past 365 days, there have been 63 traffic fatalities in Colorado Springs.  The crash investigation is currently underway, and alcohol has been ruled out as a contributing factor. The investigators are focusing on determining if speed played a role in the incident. Furthermore, no arrests have been made thus far, but the investigation is ongoing.

On 02/27/2023 at 4:21 PM, members of the Colorado Springs Police Department, Sand Creek Division, were dispatched to the intersection of Cache La Poudre and Prairie Rd. regarding a motorcycle vs vehicle traffic crash. Upon arrival officers discovered a vehicle was traveling north on Prairie Rd and stopped for the stop sign at Cache La Poudre St. As the vehicle entered the intersection a motorcycle traveling west on Cache La Poudre St struck the right side of the vehicle. The motorcycle rider was deceased on scene. Due to the nature of the crash the Major Crash Team was notified and responded to assume the investigation. The investigation is in its early stages, and it is too soon to tell if speed or alcohol are a factor in this crash.
