On Wednesday, March 22, 2023, members of the Colorado Springs Police Department, Stetson Hills Division, were dispatched to the 4500 block of Barnes Road regarding a traffic crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian; the pedestrian was deceased on the scene. On Thursday March 23, 2023, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy of the deceased pedestrian. The pedestrian was identified as a 17-year-old juvenile Doherty High School student. Due to her age, her name will not be released. This is the 12th traffic fatality in Colorado Springs this year. At this same time last year, Colorado Springs had five fatal traffic crashes. In the past 365 days, there have been 63 traffic deaths in Colorado Springs.

On March 22, 2023 at 7:21 a.m., members of the Colorado Springs Police Department, Stetson Hills Division, were dispatched to the 4500 block of Barnes Rd regarding a traffic crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. Upon arrival on the scene, it was discovered that the pedestrian was crossing Barnes Rd when the pedestrian was struck by an eastbound vehicle. The pedestrian was deceased on the scene, and the vehicle’s driver remained on the scene. Due to the nature of the crash, the Major Crash Team was contacted and responded to the scene. The initial investigation determined that the pedestrian was crossing in the crosswalk when the pedestrian was struck. The eastbound light was red when the vehicle entered the intersection. It is too early in the investigation to determine if speed or other factors were involved in this crash. Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in this investigation.
