Over the past couple years, a natural spring started bubbling through the asphalt at the Research Parkway and Channel Drive intersection. Despite efforts at repairs in 2022, the natural spring continues to push through the roadway.
City crews are currently working to increase the size of the underground pipe in order to add capacity to the existing drain. Water is being pumped at between 60-90 gallons/minute. This work will require temporary closures of the roadway.
The work is currently scheduled in two phases:
Phase 1: June 27-30. Full closure of the Research/Channel intersection.
For Phase 1, the entire intersection is closed. The detour for vehicles is to travel to the traffic light on Scarborough Drive, then south to Chancellor, then East to Channel Drive.
Phase 2: July 5-7. Phase 2 will prohibit left turns from westbound Research Parkway to southbound Channel and will otherwise follow the above detour.
With the record-setting rains so far this season, it is imperative that City crews address this potential safety hazard as soon as possible. This page will be updated with road closures and project updates. The City recognizes this inconvenience, and greatly thanks residents for their patience as this is addressed. All work is weather dependent and schedules are subject to change.
