In an ongoing effort to help keep Colorado Springs clean, the City of Colorado Springs Public Works department has implemented a new outdoor vacuum system. The new system, which is based off the back of a truck, allows workers to clean large amounts of litter along streets and medians in short periods of time.
Prior to these vacuums being introduced, cleaning up litter was purely man-powered.
The new truck will mainly focus on heavy traffic corridors such as Academy Boulevard, Austin Bluffs Parkway, Garden of the Gods Road, Nevada Avenue and Woodmen Road. However, if residents spot an area with litter, they may report it in the GoCOS! mobile app.
The new vacuum trucks are funded by the Keep It Clean COS initiative, a $2 million initiative launched in April of 2022 by Mayor John Suthers to help reduce litter in Colorado Springs. These funds will continue help to provide staffing and cover new equipment such as the newly introduced vacuum trucks.
Four new street sweepers will also be coming to Colorado Springs in the future. After a battle between citizens on what to name them, they were eventually crowned Dirt Reynolds, Sweepy McSweepface, Bruce Springsclean and Kevin.
