Traffic Impacts
In preparation for for work on this project, Colorado Springs Utilities is lowering a natural gas main that runs under Camp Creek.
This work will take place on W. Fontanero St. from Valley Road to Pleasant Street in the eastbound lane. One lane and a bike lane eastbound only will be closed from April 6 – 24, 2026. Exits from alleyways on Valley Rd. and Pleasant St. onto W. Fontanero St. will be closed.
This gas main lowering is needed to provide adequate safety clearance below the construction zone when the City begins this roundabout project later this year.

About
Design efforts are underway to replace the 31st Street bridge at Fontanero and corresponding channel, along with improved pedestrian facilities. The project will improve the congested four-way stop intersection and drainage channels with installation of a roundabout.

- Promote continuous flow of traffic and reduce congestion
- Improve air quality for residents by reducing braking/acceleration noise and air pollution
- Improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists
- Create a focal point and gateway for this historic neighborhood

- Maintain the existing character of this residential neighborhood
Project Cost
Funding for this phase of the project is through a combination of Metropolitan Planning Program (MPP) and Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) Federal grants.
Background
This project began in response to the effects of the Waldo Canyon fire and resulted in a three-pronged approach including the pond at Garden of the Gods, channel improvements at the Rock Ledge Ranch with naturalistic channel improvements, and a roundabout at Fontanero and 31st Street.

Will the sidewalks and bike lanes be affected?
Sidewalks will be widened to accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists, while dedicated bike lanes will be removed through the roundabout. Cyclists can either use widened sidewalks or the roundabout itself.
How long will the construction last?
Construction is expected to last one year. The duration may vary depending on specific project phases, adjacent projects, and weather conditions.
How will drainage improvements impact the neighborhood?
Improved surface drainage will prevent water from ponding in the travel lanes. The enhanced bridge opening will convey larger creek flows than the current bridge, reducing flood risks in the area.
