CSPD and Body Worn Camera Technology

The Colorado Springs Police Department has introduced several new technology systems designed to increase efficiency, reduce police response times, and continue providing excellent service to our community. One of these new systems is a new body-worn camera vendor, Axon.

The new Axon system integrates several legacy CSPD products, reducing administrative work and increasing the time officers can respond to calls for service and address community concerns. Of significant importance, the AI-assisted report writing tool – which takes body worn camera and interview footage and generates a draft police report narrative – has preliminarily shown a substantial reduction in report preparation time.

The new system is designed to significantly improve officer efficiency, enhance body-worn video and audio quality, and usher CSPD into the artificial intelligence (AI) era.

Below is a demo video on how the AI report writing system works and links to relevant policies governing body-worn camera usage and report writing.

Axon Assistant - Translation Technology

  • Axon Assistant is a program enabled on all CSPD Body Worn Cameras provided to officers in the field, providing real-time translation services. This program allows officers to receive real-time translation in over 50 languages. The technology can auto-detect what language is being spoken and can provide translations directly to the officer in the field. The technology can also take what an officer says and translate back to the community member what the officer needs them to know.
  • This new technology allows for more efficient interactions with community members who speak a different language. Instead of waiting for translation services over the phone or to arrive in person, an officer is able to receive immediate translation assistance. This feature increases department efficiencies and also allows for greater community engagement opportunities.
