Background and Frequently Asked Questions
To balance the 2026 City budget, with a projected $31 million budget shortfall, the City found savings through operational efficiencies, reductions in workforce, scheduled furlough days, and the permanent closure of Meadows Park Community Center. These changes are designed to maintain the City’s long-term financial health and ensure the continuation of administrative priorities including public safety, emergency response, and infrastructure services. Visit ColoradoSprings.gov/Budget for more details.
What are furlough days?
Furlough days are scheduled, unpaid days off for some City employees. They are one of several cost-saving measures the City is using to help close the projected budget gap while protecting core services that residents rely on. City employees making $72,000 or more a year are required to take two additional furlough days at a time of their choosing. These days will not impact City operations as a whole.
Will deadlines be extended because offices are closed?
In most cases, deadlines that fall on a closure day will move to the next business day. For time-sensitive matters, contact the appropriate department or division.
What happens to an appointment scheduled on a furlough day?
Appointments scheduled for a closure day will be rescheduled or addressed on the next business day. The City department will provide next steps if action is needed. Municipal Court cases will not be scheduled on furlough days.
Do I have to pay for parking in City-owned garages and parking meters on furlough days?
Parking rates at City-owned garages and parking meters remain the same during any designated furlough days. The Parking Enterprise isn’t impacted by the furlough and will maintain normal operations.
Will I be charged a late fee because the office is closed?
No. Residents will not be penalized for deadlines related to City services that fall on a scheduled furlough day.
Who can I contact with questions or concerns?
Residents can submit questions or requests for service through GoCOS at ColoradoSprings.gov/GoCOS or by using the mobile app. Please note that staff will get back to you after the scheduled closure.
