The Colorado Springs Police Department is introducing new Automated Vehicle Identification System (AVIS) technology in the form of two mobile Speed Safety Camera (SSC) systems. While this is new to the City of Colorado Springs, this technology has a proven record of helping to improve roadway safety in cities across Colorado and around the world.
One of the top concerns from community members year after year is traffic safety. Improving traffic safety is an essential core function of the department. We strive to improve traffic safety in the community by increasing voluntary compliance with laws and best driving practices. We do this through education, communication, collaboration, and enforcement. Enforcement includes leveraging technology in ways that improve the safety of community members throughout Colorado Springs.
The use of SSCs complements our existing AVIS technology (photo red light enforcement) and is just one component of our broader traffic enforcement strategy. These systems will be deployed and strategically positioned in areas with high concentrations of vulnerable roadway users. The SSCs will only be deployed in four areas:
- School Zones
- Roads bordering Municipal Parks
- Neighborhoods
- Construction zones
Our deployment strategy is centered on the safety of our children. As such, we will prioritize school zones during morning drop-off and afternoon pickup times. Between those periods, enforcement efforts will shift to roadways adjacent to municipal parks and residential neighborhoods. Construction zones will also be enforced when requested and as available.
The new Speed Safety Camera AVIS systems will be deployed the week of December 8, 2025, and CSPD will provide 30 days of warnings. After the initial 30-day warning period, enforcement starts, and fines will be issued for infractions.
For further information about CSPD’s AVIS program, see our website, where additional information about the AVIS cameras and programs will be regularly updated ColoradoSprings.gov/speed-safety-camera-program.
This notification complies with C.R.S. §42-4-110.5 and City Code §10.1.115 and meets the requirement to publicly announce the warning period of the new AVIS system to the community.
