The Foothills Trail in Garden of the Gods Park reopened this week along with a new multi-use trail underpass beneath Gateway Road. The new connection allows bikes and pedestrians to cross under the road without having to negotiate traffic.

The Foothills Trail had been rerouted for eight months to allow for the installation of a new roundabout for the park entrance, a new storm sewer system and the trail underpass.

Trail users should be aware that construction activities will continue near the trail and crews may need to temporarily adjust trail access to complete work items like final grading, landscaping and setting the stone signs in their new locations.

The 30th Street Corridor project addresses a lack of roadway shoulders and drainage facilities; aging street pavement with adjacent hillside erosion and slope destabilization; a lack of multi-use roadway facilities; safety and mobility at corridor intersections; and access for emergency vehicles and evacuation. Upon completion, anticipated in mid-2023 (weather dependent), safety and mobility will be greatly improved for the traveling public, bicyclists and pedestrians.

The design was funded by City Public Works capital funds. Surface Transportation Metro Funds are funding construction in the amount of $14.5 million, with the City also contributing $3.5 million to construction.
