On October 29, 2020, at approximately 10:45 A.M., Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) officers responded to a suspicious circumstances call for service in the 200 block of South Cascade Avenue. Arriving officers learned that the El Paso County Security obtained surveillance camera footage that captured an unknown male placing what appeared to be a rolled up piece of paper, which had been lit on fire, into the slot of a ballot box. Based on the preliminary investigation, the Regional Explosives/Arson Unit responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation.
Based on their investigation, officers determined that the lit piece of paper had self-extinguished upon being placed in the ballot box. They also verified with the El Paso County Clerk and Recorders Office that no ballots inside the box were damaged in any way. This is the only incident of its kind that we are aware of in the City of Colorado Springs limits.
Over the last several weeks, detectives have followed up on several leads, but have not made any positive identification on the suspect’s identity. We are asking the community to contact the Colorado Springs Police Department at (719) 444-7000 with any information on either this incident or the suspect.
This remains and active and open investigation. Additional information may be released as appropriate.
